Teach A Child held a meeting with HE Minister Diab, at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, in the presence of the Mr. Fadi Yarak, the director general. The main purpose of the visit was to lobby for the implementation of the new compulsory education law. We explained that a major target of our organisation is to have education not only free but also compulsory. Thanks to the effort of our government and members of parliament, this law was approved this August. Unfortunately there are still no implementation decrees and therefore there is no clear way to impose it. We relayed our concern for the application of the new law and whether there was a time frame for its execution. The minister was very positive and he told us that the legal implementation decrees will be prepared at the Ministry of Education. A committee is formed with a representative from the Ministry of Justice and a representative from the Ministry of Social Welfare. They will start meeting and they will be preparing the needed documents. This will take sometime time. It will then have to be approved by the government and the parliament.
